Dear teachers, students, domestic and international alumni, and friends from all walks of life:
Hello to you all!
Time flows on and the torch is passed from one generation to the next. Today, with great joy, we celebrate Guangxi University’s 98th birthday. We extend our warmest greetings to all faculty and staff who toil in teaching, research, and service; to all students who study diligently and strive for progress; to the retired faculty and staff who devoted their lives to our development; to the global alumni who remain connected with their alma mater; and to the leaders and friends who have long supported Guangxi University. We also express our deepest gratitude to all levels of government and to friends from society at large for their steadfast concern and support.
From Butterfly Mountain in Wuzhou to Liyun Lake in Nanning, Guangxi University has traversed a long, unbroken journey. Founded in 1928 by Mr. Ma Junwu with a national-education mission, the university has undergone location shifts and departmental reorganizations. Rebuilt in Nanning in 1958, it later joined the “211 Project” and the national “Double First-Class” initiative, and became a joint university of “ministry-region collaboration.” Though times change, our founding commitment—to safeguard China and develop Guangxi—remains intact. The motto “Diligence, Plainness and Sincerity” and the spirit of “Three Endeavors” have been passed down through generations.
Ninety-eight years of perseverance have rooted Guangxi University deeply in the land of Bagui (Guangxi). The university integrates its development with national strategies, border development, and Guangxi’s modernization, advancing in talent cultivation, disciplinary development, scientific and technological innovation, social service, and openness. We have delivered an era’s answer for a local “Double First-Class” university.
This answer is written in the fertile field of talent cultivation. We uphold the mission of educating people for the Party and for the country, guided by Party-building to drive high-quality development across the university. The University CPC Committee was approved to foster and build itself into a National Model University for Party Building Work, marking Guangxi’s first such honor for a university party committee and a historic breakthrough for Party building in Guangxi higher education. Focusing on Guangxi’s industrial needs, we optimize program layouts so classrooms connect with industry, research feeds teaching, and every Guangxi University student finds a growth direction on this land. From the “Three Endeavors” spirit to the “Three Competencies,” generations of Guangxi University people have kept the spirit and sharpened their skills. A growing number of graduates choose to stay in Guangxi for employment and entrepreneurship, devoting their youth to industrial frontlines, rural fields and scientific researches. The depth of educating people lies in intergenerational inheritance—every student’s growth is Guangxi University’s strongest power.
This answer is also written on the ascent toward disciplinary peaks. We align our discipline chains with industry chains and our innovation chains with development needs, so education, science, and talent mutually empower one another across Guangxi. With civil engineering leads the way; materials science and engineering advance strongly, with disciplines climbing to new heights. Each milestone’s record reflects our confidence to serve national strategies and Guangxi’s needs.
This answer is reflected in practical service on the frontline of Guangxi’s development. Academician Zheng Jielian’s team continuously overcomes the challenges of ultra-long-span arch bridges, setting world records for arch-span construction. Academician Wang Shuangfei’s team pioneers green papermaking technologies, maintaining international leadership. We contribute scientific strength to the Pinglu Canal, safeguard China’s “sugar bowl” with wisdom from Guangxi, offer safe, low-carbon reinforcement solutions to the earthquake-stricken area in Liuzhou, and inject robust energy into the development of Guangxi’s green building materials industry. The impact of service grows with every breakthrough and every expedition—rooted in Bagui(Guangxi), each effort demonstrates responsibility.
This answer is also written on the world stage of open cooperation. We established the Institute of Oceanography to build an integrated, interdisciplinary “Great Ocean” research platform; we led the development of the ISO international standard for recycled aggregate concrete, contributing China’s solutions to global large-scale construction; remaining outward-looking, we leverage our regional advantages to implement the international development strategy “Deepen Engagement with ASEAN, Reach out to the World,” championing China-ASEAN collaboration as a mission, and leverage state visits, including that of Tô Lâm, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President of Viet Nam, to fuel cooperation. We are building a shared understanding of a “new era of talent cultivation in education” and creating new platforms for ASEAN scientific, educational, and cultural cooperation. The breadth of openness expands year by year—every handshake and dialogue echoes Guangxi University’s engagement with the world.
Ninety-eight years of striving are possible only with the strong support of social groups and friends; they are soaked with the sweat of generations who have dedicated themselves to Guangxi University. Here, we extend our highest respect to all colleagues and friends who have contributed to Guangxi University’s development.
Looking ahead to the 15th Five-Year Plan period, we will pursue higher goals with more practical steps, embedding Guangxi University deeply in the nation’s needs and Guangxi’s aspirations. In the disciplinary arena, we will further raise the profile of civil engineering as a world-class discipline within the Double First-Class framework; in the industrial chain, we will connect basic research to industrial applications to support the forestry-pulp-paper and key metal industries; within the open development framework, we will implement a path of “R&D in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, integration in Guangxi, and application in ASEAN countries” and continue to build Guangxi as a hub for ASEAN-oriented science, education, and cultural cooperation, supporting AI innovation development for ASEAN; to the sea, we will establish a highland for marine science and technology innovation, cultivate top marine talents, and build a high-level think tank for marine development—protecting the marine ecosystem and serving a sea-oriented economy; across sugarcane fields and forest belts, we will advance full-chain innovation in sugarcane breeding, smart agriculture, green sugar production, and high-value utilization of by-products; for people’s livelihoods, we will support healthy Guangxi and strengthen health cooperation between China and ASEAN through talent and science education; committed to our duties, we will leverage border openness and promote fine traditional Chinese culture. This is not a blueprint that exists only on paper, but the bright future Guangxi University is about to pursue.
In these 98 years we have come a long way; at the dawn of a new century, the weight of responsibility lies on our shoulders. Under the care of the CPC Central Committee and the strong leadership of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region CPC Committee and government, let all our faculty, students, and alumni unite in purpose and action, work hard, and celebrate Guangxi University’s centennial with tangible achievements. Together, we will contribute Guangxi University’s strength to China’s modernization and national rejuvenation, and write Guangxi University’s new glory in the new era.
The prelude to our centennial celebration has already begun. We warmly invite alumni at home and abroad to visit more often, share fond memories, and recall their youth. We sincerely invite friends from all sectors to continue walking with Guangxi University, help Guangxi University, and take part in the great undertaking of building a powerful country through education and celebrating the centenary of our founding.
