GXU Achieves New High in 2025 "ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects"

Recently, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, a professional organization specializing in higher education evaluation, officially released the 2025 "ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects." Nineteen disciplines from GXU entered the global top 500, ranking 64th among Chinese mainland universities and first among Guangxi universities. Both of the autonomous region's disciplines that made the global TOP 50 are from Guangxi University, and eight of the nine disciplines entering the global top 100 are from GXU.

Since the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the university, based on the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education and anchored in its operational positioning of "firmly rooting in the land of Bagui——another name of Guangxi to build a 'Double First-Class' university with Chinese characteristics," has taken discipline construction as its priority. Closely focusing on the four major characteristics of "subtropical, ASEAN, ocean, and frontier ethnicity," the university has promoted interdisciplinary integration and connotative development, achieving a leapfrog improvement in disciplinary strength: 12 disciplines at the university are now in the top 1% of the ESI global rankings, among which Engineering and Materials Science have entered the top 1‰ globally. The Nature Index ranking has jumped to 171st among global universities (73rd in the Chinese mainland), an improvement of 495 places since the beginning of the "14th Five-Year Plan" period.

In recent years, closely adhering to the core objectives of building a strong education system for both the nation and the region, and targeting the requirements of the "Double First-Class" initiative and the joint construction by the ministry and the region, the university has strengthened the top-level planning of discipline construction and systematically promoted organized discipline development. Upholding the philosophy of "optimizing structure, strengthening characteristics, and improving quality," the university has deepened institutional and mechanism reforms, clarified key directions for disciplinary development, adjusted and optimized the layout of specialties and disciplines, and emphasized interdisciplinary integration and collaborative innovation. Continuous efforts have been made in areas such as forming large teams, building major platforms, tackling significant projects, and producing high-level achievements. This has gradually established an academic ecology led by high-level disciplines and supported by the collaborative development of other disciplines, comprehensively enhancing the core competitiveness of the disciplines and their effectiveness in serving local economic and social development, providing a solid guarantee for building a research-oriented university. In the next step, the university will closely follow the strategic deployment for strengthening education nationally and regionally, transforming the advantages of disciplinary development into effective momentum for serving national strategies and Guangxi's economic and social development, providing solid support for building a magnificent Guangxi with Chinese characteristics for the new era.

The ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects covers 57 disciplines across five fields: Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences. It employs five indicator modules: World-Class Teachers, World-Class Research Output, High-Quality Research Results, Research Influence, and International Collaboration, comprising nine internationally comparable objective academic indicators. Approximately 20,000 subjects from over 2,000 universities in about 100 countries and regions are ranked each year. In 2025, a total of 3,747 disciplines from 359 Chinese mainland universities were ranked. This inclusion signifies that the relevant disciplines of the university have gained international authoritative recognition in terms of faculty quality, research level, academic achievements, and international influence, placing them among the world's first-class ranks.
